WHAT IS PERIMENOPAUSE AND MENOPAUSE?

Perimenopause and Menopause are a natural hormonal transition in a woman’s life, however it can be overwhelming at times.

I want you to know that you are not alone, many women find this period in their lives challenging.

It is often referred to as "second puberty".

However, there are strategies and solutions available to navigate this phase with grace and confidence.

Here a few points about menopause that you may find helpful:

  1. Timing of menopause: Menopause typically occurs around the age of 51, though this can vary for each woman.  Officially, menopause is recognised when menstruation ceases for twelve consecutive months.

  2. Perimenopause duration: it usually starts in your 40's and can last for 4 to 8 years. It can be as short as one year, or as long as ten. During this period, the hormone oestrogen fluctuates and then declines, whilst the hormone progesterone declines, leading to various symptoms.

  3. Perimenopause symptoms: Symptoms during perimenopause may include irregular periods, breast pain, heavy periods, mood problems, migraines, hot flushes night sweats and sleep disturbances. While sleep issues and hot flushes tend to last for an average of four years, usually three before final period and one after. Flushes unfortunately can start ten years before your final period and last up to ten years after.

  4. During menopause itself symptoms that may begin are: vaginal dryness, bladder infections, stress incontinence, low libido, pelvic floor issues, prolapse, dry skin, hair loss and weight gain. These symptoms may vary from woman to woman.

  5. Natural health alternatives: There are several natural health alternatives that can help alleviate symptoms associated with menopause. These include herbal supplements, nutritional supplements, dietary changes, lifestyle modifications and practices such as meditation.

  6. Tailored treatment plans: Every woman’s menopause experience is unique. At Kim Kay Wellness, we offer personalised treatment plans tailored to your specific needs and symptoms.

  7. Building a support network: Menopause can be transformative and challenging. Having a support network of friends, family and other women who understand your experience can be invaluable.  Seeking guidance from a trained health care professional is also recommended.

Research has shown naturopathic treatment to be effective in supporting the erratic hormone fluctuations and reducing the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause.

Women’s attitudes vary immensely when it comes to menopause.

Some embrace it as a natural experience and find it liberating, while others see it as a nightmare of uncontrollable moods and hot flashes.

Some women don't even realise they're going through menopause and dismiss their symptoms as the unavoidable side-effect of stress and lifestyle choices.

I want you to feel supported, informed and empowered as you navigate through perimenopause into menopause.
